2005年至2008年，为向国际翻译界广泛宣传第18届世界翻译大会，中国译协开展了其成立以来规模最大的国际公关活动，先后组织了对14个国家和地区的出访活动，与境外31个翻译组织和机构建立了联系。这些国际交流活动的效果是很明显的：2008年8月，第18届世界翻译大会在上海迎来了来自世界70个国家的近600名翻译界人士，占参会总人数的五分之二。这是中国翻译界与国际翻译界第一次全面而深入的接触与交流，对于促进中外在翻译各个领域的沟通与交流，推动翻译事业的发展，起到了很好的作用。
为巩固这一国际交流成果，进一步拓宽中外翻译界的交流与合作，中国译协决定每年组织国内翻译界人士参加一些重要的国际译界活动，同时，欢迎译界人士积极参与国际译界事务和活动，展示中国翻译界实力。同时，中国译协还将授权有一定造诣、热心翻译事业的中国译协会员或理事，作为中国译协代表独立参加相关国际事务或活动。
2009年，中国译协拟组团参加以下国际会议：
1、美国语言企业协会第7届年会（7th ALC Annual Conference, www.alcus.org），时间：2009年5月13日-16日，地点：美国得克萨斯州奥斯汀市，目标群体：翻译服务企业，本地化服务企业，翻译软硬件生产企业等。
2、世界翻译高校联盟2009年年会（2009 CIUTI Conference, www.uni-leipzig.de/~isuew/ciuti/），时间：2009年6月初；地点：瑞士日内瓦，会议主题：翻译未来：超越学术与职业培训（Translating the future: beyond academic and professional training）。
3、美国翻译协会第50届年会（50th Annual Conference of the American Translators Association, www.atanet.org/），时间：2009年10月28日～31日，地点：美国纽约。
